George H. W. Bush (1924–2018) made mistakes in at least four areas during his presidency (1989–1993).
His first mistake was his choice of Clarence Thomas to serve as a justice on the US Supreme Court. The Anita Hill hearings were an embarrassment to the Bush administration. In addition, Thomas's ideas on a variety of subjects have been viewed by many as too extreme.
A second event for which he was criticized was his invasion of Panama in 1989, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. Both the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations denounced the invasion.
Although Bush ably presided over the end of the Cold War and the war in Kuwait, he proved to be relatively weak in domestic affairs. His approval rating sunk as the economy soured. He eventually reneged on his "read my lips" pledge not to raise taxes.
In 1992, he ran a weak reelection campaign and was defeated by Bill Clinton, thus making him a one-term president.
