The pyramids of ancient Egypt were very large structures made of stone. Their main functional purpose was to serve as tombs for various rulers of Egypt and other very important people. Of course, there is no functional need for such grand tombs. Therefore, we can also say that a major point of these pyramids was to enhance the prestige of those for whom they were built. They showed that any ruler who could have such huge structures built for him and his family must be a very powerful person indeed. Therefore, we can say that these huge stone structures were both tombs and means of proclaiming the greatness of those who had them built.
