The main challenges faced by the US were domestic ones.  There was no serious foreign opposition to the US taking the Philippines (once they won the war with Spain) or Hawaii or in doing anything else that made the US "imperialistic."  However, there was serious opposition to imperialism within the country.  There were those who believed that imperialism was against basic American values.  There were those who did not want non-whites brought into the country through imperialism.  Their opposition was the main obstacle faced by the US as it became an imperial power.
