The main goals of the Bandung Conference were to create solidarity among countries (many of them newly independent) from Africa and Asia and to assert the idea that these countries would not be part of the Cold War.

In 1955, many countries in Africa and Asia had very recently won independence after having been colonized by European countries.  They felt that it would benefit them to create a sort of solid bloc that could help one another.  They also felt that they should try to create a movement (later known as the Non-Aligned Movement) that would try to avoid getting involved in the Cold War power struggles between the two superpowers.
