I am doing a research project on the changing gender roles in the home through out time. I am investigating what they were like back in the 1980's, how and why they have changed today, and what they could possibly be like in the future.
This is actually a very hard question to answer. Gender roles vary as much as dialects depending on what part of the country, or even specific parts of a state, you are referring to. If you are looking at the United States as a whole, I would say that you are going to have problems generalizing the statistics. I would think that the roles of the 1980s did change dramatically with the number of two income families though. But, in regards to gender roles, the female of the family still wold have maintained the household- much like today.
If you are looking at the world as a whole, I believe that your results would be dramatically different. It seems to me that overall, the gender roles for the global nation, have stayed relatively the same if you look at cultures that have been around longer than a mere 235 years.
Culturally, the U.S. is a very young nation. That being said, our nation has changed more dramatically than any other.
I do believe that you need to take into consideration the financial state of our world today. Many families cannot survive on a single family income. This could have a great effect on the statistics which you should encounter during your research.
One site that I found that might help you is :
Good luck with your research. It sounds like a very interesting investigation!
