Televisions sat in the homes of almost all Americans in the 1990's with TVs sitting in 99% of American homes.  Americans were also watching a lot of TV with some estimates placing it upwards of 6-7 hours per day.

Situational Comedies or sit-coms were very popular with shows like "Cheers," "Seinfeld" and others of the same kind topping lists of popularity.  Other series were also very popular with shows like "E.R." being one of the top shows of the decade.

There were some forays into what had previously been more forbidden topics like sexual orientation and using worse language on TV, particularly broadcast TV which has previously not been condoned.
