Joshua was appointed by God (according to the Old Testament) to take over from Moses as leader of the Israelites.  It was under Joshua that they entered and conquered Canaan.  God gave Joshua a great deal of encouragement and help in this.

We will look at three ways in which God helped and encouraged Joshua.

  • Parted the River Jordan for the Israelites.  Just as God had done in helping the Israelites escape Egypt, he parted the waters to allow them to get into Canaan easily.
  • Battle of Jericho.  Here, God instructed Joshua about how to defeat the walled city of Jericho.
  • Making the sun stand still.  At Gibeon, God helped the Israelites defeat their enemies by making the sun stand still so there would be more time for killing their enemies.  God had, just before that, killed many of the enemy with hailstones.

In these ways, God is said to have helped and encouraged Joshua.
