Grandfather knows that Billy wants dogs he can teach to hunt raccoons.  He does not help Billy raise the money, but he does help him with the dogs.  Grandfather helps by researching to find out how much the dogs will cost.  When he realizes that the dogs are $5 cheaper, he sends away for two.  When he gets the dogs, his grandfather helps him train the dogs.  He shows Billy how to use raccoons’ fur to teach the dogs to trail.  The dogs learn quickly.  The dog they call Old Dan is smart and strong, and Little Ann is smart and quick.
