In what ways can English vary according to the social background of the speaker?
English can vary in so many ways with social background being just one; however, social background can be significant in how a person speaks. People tend to use the language common to their background such as very sophisticated words and structure with a high status background. Those with a very common social status which is usually based on economics tend to use English with a few grammar mistakes or careless pronunciation. Those with a low economic and thus social status tend to also use what they hear around them. This can include many grammar mistakes, profanity, mispronunciation of words and a simpler vocabulary. Because people are often judged by their use of language, those with higher social backgrounds tend to be much more aware and careful with their word choice, grammar, and sophistication of phrasing.
