In what ways did Jefferson follow policies similar to those favored by modern day political groups like the Tea Party and the more conservative faction of the Republican Party?

Thomas Jefferson resembled these groups mainly in his attitude towards the federal government.  In other ways, he was much less like these conservative groups.

Jefferson was an anti-federalist.  This meant that he did not really trust the federal government.  He thought that it was too likely to abuse the rights of the people.  He thought that the states were more likely to respect the people's rights because they were closer to the people.  For this reason, he wanted states to have more power and the federal government to have less power.  This is one of the major beliefs of the conservative groups that you mention.
