David Mamet's play, A Life in the Theatre, made its debut appearance at the Goodman Theater in Chicago, Illinois in February 1977. It starred Mike Nussbaum and Joe Mantegna, and was directed by Gregory Mosher. The play made its New York City debut off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theater on October 20, 1977, starring Peter Evans and Ellis Rabb (directed by Gerald Gutierrez). It ran for 288 performances. A revival was later staged at the Goodman Theater in 2006; and it appeared on Broadway at the Schoenfeld Theater in October 2010 starring Patrick Stewart.
