The night is dark and silent as Baldeo and his son Tembu keep watch in a little hut in the middle of the jungle. Normally, it's a pretty straightforward, uneventful job. All Baldeo and Tembu have to do is make sure that the signal lamp keeps burning and that the railroad tunnel is free from any obstructions that might hold up the passing of the mail train.

But on this particular night, things get a lot more complicated. The silence of the night is shattered by the low, insistent growl of a tiger in the surrounding jungle. Baldeo knows the jungle like the back of his hand and instantly recognizes the unmistakable sound of one of nature's most fearsome predators. Fully awake, he tenses his body and grabs an ax before leaving the relative safety of the hut to venture out into the dark, dangerous depths of the jungle.

At first, all is calm and quite again. Even the normal cacophony of animal noises seems to have stopped. But this is just the lull before the storm. All of a sudden, Baledo hears the sound of a thump and the rattle of small stones. Straight away, he knows that the tiger has sprung into the cutting.
