The battle of the St. Eloi Craters is significant mainly in terms of Canadian history. It was a relatively minor battle in terms of the overall war and was dwarfed in importance by the Battle of Verdun that was going on at the same time. However, it is important in Canadian history since it was the first major action for the 2nd Canadian Division and since it was such a complete disaster.
In this battle, the Canadians were put into an untenable position. They were asked to hold a position that was extremely vulnerable to German fire. They were unable to hold their position and were defeated. This led to an investigation as to who was at fault and to conflict between the British and Canadians.
