Shakespeare would have lived a rather charmed childhood.  He was the son of a wealthy merchant; most believe that his father was a leatherworker who was involved in town leadership. Because Shakespeare was not one of the impoverished commoners, but rather part of the more respected trade class, he had an opportunity for education.

Shakespeare attended a typical grammar school of his day. There he learned Latin and studied the classics (Homer, Socrates, etc.).  He would not have had a great deal of free time, because most of his day and early evening would have been spent in school.  Because his father was of the working class, Shakespeare most likely had responsibilities in his father's business.
