What was behind Pat Tillman's decision to join the US Army rather then play football?

It is hard to know why Pat Tillman left his football career to join the US Army because he refused to give interviews about the decision.

There was clearly some degree to which family played into the decision.  Tillman entered the Army with his brother and their great-grandfather was in World War II.  Tillman obviously felt some need to serve his country.  However, he did not really approve of the war in Iraq and so was clearly not motivated simply by patriotism.  Even Tillman's biographer, Jon Krakauer was unable to determine exactly why Tillman entered the military.

Human motivations are hard to understand with certainty.  This is a case which shows that fact.
