The first thing that Holden does upon arriving in New York City is to call a stripper named Faith Cavendish. He had met her once before, at a party where she was escorting a Princeton student. Holden is looking for a good time, and is very disappointed to hear that she does not want to meet a stranger in the city at such a late hour. She offers to meet him the next day, but Holden claims that he will be too busy. Holden had contemplating calling a number of people when he arrived in New York, including his brother and his sister, but ultimately decides to call Faith. It is significant that he does not contact anyone that he is actually close to, but chooses a virtual stranger.
