To begin with, Bruno is very sad that he had to leave his grandparents and his friends. He misses them dearly and when he moves with his immediate family to the new house he becomes very lonely. When he sees the people in the striped pajamas his first reaction was that he was filled with curiosity. He wants to know who those people are and why they are there. He asks his father and he states that they are not people at all, they are Jews. This is very confusing to Bruno because to him they are just people. He becomes very good friends with Shmuel. He does not realize that this place that is holding his good friend captive is the concentration camp Auschwitz.

"...Despite the chaos that followed, Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel's hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let go".
