After Toycie dies, Beka carries on a wake for her, in her heart. When the novel begins, Toycie has recently died, and Beka is sad because they did not hold a traditional 9-day wake for her. So Beka promises to do this in her own heart-honoring her friend in her heart. One of the main things she promises herself she will do is stop lying. Then, the novel flashes back to 8 months before Toycie's death and the story is told in flashbacks. Beka changes after Toycie dies in other ways. She begins to work hard in school, she is less disrespectful to her parents, she enters the essay contest, and she wins the prize, proving that there IS hope for Creole girls like her (and like Toycie), and that she can honor her friend by living her life to the fullest. Beka changes her life in that she grows up.
