The genre in which Capote's "A Christmas Memory" falls would be personal memoir.  This piece is definitely autobiographical as he tells the story of a young boy who remembers vividly the last summer he spent with an aging female relative and as he is away at school, he receives the news that she has died.

The purpose is to remember this loved one, but also to put into perspective the many emotions through which the boy traveled to get to the other side:  friendship, happiness, innocence, loneliness, poverty, death and sadness.  The young man spends a childhood unncorrupted by the things that make up adulthood, but he is not completely safe or removed from this world as he experiences the death of a favorite companion.  There is some entertainment value here, but it is also under the category of lessons learned.  We learn from the experiences of others when we read so that when and if we are ever in similar situations, we have a knowledge base from which to draw and we might know better how to react.
