What type of Safari does Time Safari Inc. arrange for their customers in "A Sound of Thunder?"
Time Safari arranges safaris to any year in the past to shoot any animal you want.
The sign at the entrance tells you pretty much all you need to know about what safaris are offered.
TIME SAFARI, INC.
SAFARIS TO ANY YEAR IN THE PAST.
YOU NAME THE ANIMAL.
WE TAKE YOU THERE.
YOU SHOOT IT.
The Time Safari corporation allows people to go on safaris to any period in history to hunt any prey. It costs a phenomenal amount of money, and they have to sign a release saying that they understand that they may not come back alive.
Eckels chose to go back to the time of the dinosaurs. He wants to shoot a t-rex, which is a very large dinosaur. This is no problem for Time Safari, but they are going to charge him a significant fee. He provides a check for ten thousand dollars and is told that they guarantee nothing.
When Eckels gets there, he has a little problem with shooting the dinosaur though. It is a really big animal, and he is not at all ready for its greatness.
"It can't be killed," Eckels pronounced this verdict quietly, as if there could be no argument. He had weighed the evidence and this was his considered opinion. The rifle in his hands seemed a cap gun. "We were fools to come. This is impossible."
Eckels has been admonished not to get off the path. He has boasted about all of the animals he has killed. Now, when faced with this giant, he says that it looks like it could touch the moon, it is so big. He is terrified. Travis has to kill it for him. However, in his terror and confusion, somewhere along the way, Eckels steps off the path, and changes the course of history.
Travel agencies have a way of taking whoever has enough money wherever they are foolish enough to go. You can climb high mountains, and maybe even go into space. It is not out of the realm of possibility to imagine a time travel safari if time travel was possible. People want to stretch themselves to their limits. People will pay for experiences. They are just not always ready for them.
