Madagascar is a very poor country that does not have much industry.  The bulk of its people are farmers, most of whom farm at a subsistence level.  Industry only accounts for about 16% of the country’s gross domestic product.

There is some amount of mining for things like coal and nickel on the island.  There are also oil deposits that are starting to be exploited.  The country does have some Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in which light industries make goods for exports.  As with many poor countries, these industries tend to be low value-added industries such as clothing and textiles.

Overall, the lack of industry in Madagascar is one of the biggest reasons why it is a very poor country.
