"The Most Dangeous Game" by Richard Connell is a fascinating story about high stakes hunting. The hunter becomes the hunted in a macabre game played by men. When Sanger Rainsford accidentally ends up on an island owned by General Zaroff, he is intrigued by the possibility of a good hunt. General Zaroff is pleased because he knows that Rainsford is a celebrated big game hunter, but the reader soon finds out that General Zaroff has a very different kind of hunting in mind. He plans to hunt Rainsford. Though Rainsford absolutely wants no part of this sick game, he finds he has no real choice in the matter. It's either to be hunted by Zaroff or turned over to the brute Ivan. Before the hunt, General Zaroff makes two suggestions. The first is to wear moccasins in order to leave behind a "poorer trail." The second suggestion is to stay away from the big swamp. "We call it Death Swamp. There's quicksand there," Zaroff said.
