I believe you are referring to Katherine Anne Porter's "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall." This short story uses both limited omniscient narration and interior monologue revealing Granny's inner thoughts. The interior monologues allow the reader an inner look into Granny's feelings and past experiences, especially those with death. These moments of interior monologue also aid in helping the reader undertand the mental state of Granny as deteriorating.
