The main accomplishment of Charlemagne was his expansion of the Carolingian Empire. As emperor, Charlemagne took many new areas into the empire. Notably, these included all of Northern Italy and parts of Spain. Another accomplishment of Charlemagne has to do with the way he governed the empire. The empire was not very tightly administered or organized. Charlemagne worked hard to remedy this situation. He tried to bring the empire more under central control and to have an organized system of rule. Part of this involved using the Church as a unifying force. During Charlemagne's lifetime, at least, he was successful in this effort.
