Nurse practitioner and administrator are two potential career paths for senior nurses who wish to increase their salaries and progress in their careers. The roles are similar in that they both bring enhanced prestige, require additional skills and training, and improve pay. They are very different in their tasks, skills, and training. Administration requires knowledge of nursing, but does not involve direct patient care or nursing skills, but requires management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, workflow management, and human resource management. The nurse practitioner develops advanced skills as a nurse and works directly with patients. The nurse practitioner also has the entrepreneurial option of setting up private practice.
