If you’re referring to the interview book that Skeeter and Aibileen are working on, the trigger incident that gets all the other black maids involved is Yule May’s arrest and imprisonment, which is told in Chapter 19. Yule May needs some money to send her twin sons to college. Unfortunately, she decides to steal a ring from her employer, socialite Hilly Holbrook. She’s immediately arrested and sent to the Mississippi State Penitentiary. This act makes the color divide between the white estate owners and their black maids even more painfully obvious than before. Now the maids are ready to tell their stories.

If you’re referring to the escalation of the civil rights movement in general, the two major trigger incidents that occur within the narrative of the book are the assassinations of Medgar Evers (June 12, 1963, in Jackson) and President John F. Kennedy (November 22, 1963, in Dallas). This greater challenge is not resolved within the pages of this book, though.
