There are few things you need to do to be able to play the guitar and sing at the same time. I used to be in a band and it was hard for me as well. I will give you four suggestions that helped me.
First, make sure that you know the song by heart. By this I mean you must memorize the song and be able to sign it without even thinking. This will help you, because there is one less thing you need to keep in mind.
Second, play guitar with a metronome. This will help you keep time. This might be the hardest thing to do, because different song have different times. For instance, a 4/4 song is easier to play than an 3/4 song. So, if you work on your rhythm it will help you play and sing at the same time.
Third, make sure that you can play the song perfectly without looking at chords or music. Next, you can try to have another sing while you play. Finally, you do it all.
Fourth, think of getting a backup singer to sing along with you.
Best of luck!
I don't play the guitar, but I do play the ukulele and I was in the same predicament as you. Initially, I was so excited to play and sing on the ukulele, but it frustrated me that I didn't know how to multitask. Therefore, I started slow, I learned how to play chords and strum properly. When I successfully could play the song by heart, I played it and hummed at the same time to get used to it. Afterwards, when I felt more confident, I started to sing along. It just takes a lot of practice, but you'll get there!
