Gene's return visit to Devon School, the site of the memories he is reliving in The Separate Peace, takes place in the late fall. "It was a raw, non-descript time of year, toward the end of November" - the perfect time of year for the visit, given the kind of events Gene was remembering. All the comments about the weather and conditions lend to the atmosphere and support the impact of the events that took place fifteen years earlier. It was a dismal, gloomy, windy and rainy day, with enough fog to give Gene the feeling that he was completely isolated from the rest of the world; alone in this place of momentous happenings with the memories he needed to revisit and resolve.
