In The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963, the Watson family makes a summer road trip from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama. The family consists of the mother, the father, and three children: Byron, Kenny, and Joey. Byron, the oldest, is reluctant to go, as it means leaving his friends and social life.

In the days before their departure, Momma prepares in numerous ways for the family’s trip. She designates a special notebook to use as a journal of their trip. She also goes to the library and does research so that she will be familiar with the places they will pass through and can tell the children about them. To keep the children occupied during the trip, she brings books, puzzles, and games.
