There are a number of problems that face Latin American countries, though not all of these problems face all Latin American countries. Among these problems are:
- Poverty. In some countries, poverty is pervasive. In other countries like Brazil, there are many people who are not poor while, at the same time, there are massive slums that can be the source of social unrest.
- Lack of democracy. Many Latin American countries tend towards undemocratic governments. Venezuela is the best example of this today, but there are many others.
- Drug trafficking. This is a problem that does not afflict all Latin American countries, but many are either sources for drugs or have drugs pass through them on the way to the United States.
