Both films thematically explore the human spirit of exploration. Mankind is reaching out to places far beyond Earth's atmosphere, but that theme should not come as a surprise considering both films are science fiction films about space. What both films do explore quite well within their genre is a theme of isolation. Neither film has its characters surrounded by hundreds of humans on space ships. These movies are not Star Wars or Star Trek in that regard. These humans are on their own and must depend entirely upon themselves for survival. The small crews and small crew spaces inevitably lead to a sense of loneliness, which is perfect considering the emptiness of space itself.

Another theme that both films share is a theme of sacrifice. Interstellar is loaded with sacrifice, and audiences are primed for the film's emphasis on sacrifice early on when we are shown the Lazarus pilots venturing through the wormhole fully knowing that most/all of them will die before they are found. The human sacrifice is a big point of this film. Similarly, 2010: The Year We Make Contact also shows audiences sacrifice; however, this time we are asked to make the connection that humans are not the only entity that can be sacrificed to save lives. As the humans struggle to figure out how to escape Jupiter in time, they realize it is possible to do; however, HAL and the Discovery must be sacrificed.
