"Hunger for Memory" is the autobiography of Richard Rodriguez, a well-known Hispanic essayist, Through a series of essays, the book deals with many of the hardships of a young boy whose family immigrated to the United States. Since learning English was one of Rodriguez' first challenges, the theme of alienation caused by language barriers is a major theme. Rodriguez also deals with the life of America's immigrant culture, especially the desire all immigrant parents have for their children to succeed more than they did.
As Rodriguez matures, he gradually integrates into "American" society. However, his assimilation into American society was not without its price and Rodriguez deals with the themes about the difficulties assimilation and identification with two cultures.
