What is the theme of “The Evening Sun” and how is that theme communicated?

I think that the theme of "The Evening Sun" is race relations, as it sets a backdrop for the whole story. Even though race is not in the forefront, it is always in the characters minds, and therefore the readers mind. For example, obviously, the first thing to come to mind is when Nancy is kicked down by Mr. STovell after he refuses to pay for her services. And then, even though he knocked out her teeth, he is not sent to jail, Nancy is.
