Techniques that Napoleon and Snowball use in their struggle for power over Animal Farm include jingoism, propaganda and violent force. Initially, the two pigs are co-conspirators to take control of the farm from Mr. Jones. In their quest to galvanize their power base and gain support for the rebellion that will shift control of the farm to the animals from the humans, Napoleon and Snowball use jingoism. They teach the other animals about “animalism” and create a catchy little tune for the “Beasts of England” song that the other animals on the farm can learn. The song reinforces the concept that all animals that walk on two legs are bad and those that walk on four legs (including the birds, whose wings are considered legs) are good. They even create a tablet of the seven basic commandments or principals of animalism and the others learn to read the words that will guide their lives and goals.
