There are many choices of symbols that can be used to illustrate the main characters in The Face on the Milk Carton. The main character, Janie Johnson, could be symbolized by a campfire. This would indicate her red hair, the fact that she is a burning flame waiting to be attended to. Or a better one might be a mysterious cloak covered figure. This would show that she has been kidnapped, and no one really can find out where she is or has ended up.
The character of Reeve Shields could be symbolized as a pair of broken binoculars. She grows up next to Janie, seemingly oblivious to Janie's emotions and experiences. Likewise, Janie's best friend, Sarah-Charlotte Sherwood can be described as a cloud. She doesn't seem to care or notice the needs of Janie at all. The Spring family can be shown as a photograph with a big hole torn in the middle. It is a symbol of a torn and incomplete family.
