Anita Brookner's novel, Hotel du Lac, tells the story of romance novel author Edith Hope, who is temporarily living in a Swiss hotel to work on her latest book. She is nursing a secret of which the reader is not immediately informed. Instead of working on her novel, Edith spends most of her time socializing with the various guests at the Hotel du Lac. She reminisces about her past loves and mistakes and how she will react the next time love comes her way. She finds that it is not a long wait, since one of the guests, Mr. Neville, shows an interest that causes her to refocus her views of life.
