The first part of the beginning chapter of the novel opens on a hut wherein Demetrio, a noted bandit, lives with his wife and young son. Upon hearing hooves on the ground, Demetrio leaves to avoid suspicion and two soldiers come upon the house. The two men shoot the dog, who has alerted the family of their presence, and enter the house.

The soldiers demand food and drink from the woman, and are very rude and clearly inebriated. They discuss Demetrio and show some respect for him as a great bandit, before the lieutenant begins implying that he wants to take the woman for sex when Demetrio steps out of the shadows and reveals himself. He has an open shot on the men, but allows them to leave so that he doesn't anger any other soldiers or government officials. After the soldiers leave, Demetrio and his family also leave to go to "Father's", and on their journey, they look back to see their house ablaze.
