The three vampires enter the clearing and introduce themselves as Laurent, Victoria, and James. The Cullens kindly ask the visitors to refrain from hunting on their territory, and the visitors agree, although they are surprised that the Cullens have a permanent residence nearby, and are curious as to how the Cullens manage to live in one place for so long. Carlisle invites them back to the house so he can explain. Everything is going well until the wind blows Bella's scent towards the visiting vampires, inciting their appetite. The Cullens are instantly on the defensive, and Carlisle insists "she's with us," letting the other vampires know that she is not to be killed. Laurent backs off, not wanting trouble, but James and Victoria look interested in Bella. Emmett, Alice, and Edward take Bella and leave. Edward tells Bella that he has read the tracker's mind and he is going to hunt Bella. Edward is very anxious wants to take Bella away somewhere but Bella refuses to leave Charlie defenseless, so they head back to Charlie's house with a plan to have Charlie see Bella pack up and leave for Phoenix so he won't involve the authorities.
