Bella asks Edward about how his siblings feel about her, and he says that Alice is the most supportive while the rest can’t understand why he can’t leave Bella alone. Edward’s sister, Rosalie, glares at Bella, and he apologizes on her behalf. He tells Bella that his relationship with her could be dangerous if something went wrong. He and his family run the risk of being exposed if anything happens to Bella. Bella understands that she should be frightened by his comment, but all she can do is feel sorry for the conflicts he faces. When she gets out to her car after school, Bella finds a note from Edward, telling her to “be safe.”

The next day, when Edward arrives, Bella reminds him of their deal, and they climb into her truck. When Edward discovers that Bella hasn’t told anyone she will be with him that day, he is upset. He knows now that no one will be able to blame him if she disappears, and he worries that she has taken these measures to protect him.  They come to an open meadow in a clearing, and Bella believes it is one of the most beautiful places she has ever seen. She enters the meadow, and then turns around to see that Edward has not followed. She finds him standing at the edge of the clearing, in the shade. She remembers that he had promised her that today would be the day he would show her why he cannot go out in sunlight, and she stares at him curiously. Taking a deep breath, Edward steps into the sunlight.
