Belgarath the Sorcerer (which is part of the The Belgariad & The Malloreon series) is an amazing fantasy novel titled after the main character, a famous sorcerer named Belgarath.

A prequel to all of the other books in the series, this fantasy novel is really about Belgarath's memoirs. Anyone familiar with the full series knows that there has been a battle going on for over 7 millenia. This is the story about 1 boy, who has been orphaned, and who grows up into a man and becomes a sorcerer. At that time, long ago, all of the different gods still walked on the earth among their children, who were mortal. Not only does he become a sorcerer, but he becomes a famous prophet. This, of course, is Belgarath.

The battle begins when the Dark Lord Torak splits the known world, wreaking havoc on the people. The people who oppose the Dark Lord are the disciples of the God Aldur. Of course, the most important one in their ranks is Belgarath. It turns out that the Dark Lord has actually cracked the world by using the famous orb, which was actually supposed to belong to the God Aldur. Belgarath remains intensely loyal through the whole story, while he fights many battles and makes many prophecies. All the while, the sorcerer has to contend with the sharp wit and the cynicism of his own daughter, Polgara.

Ultimately, of course, the sorcerer and all the other disciples are triumphant! What remains is a beautiful precursor to the rest of the modern fantasy series.
