Ethanol is another name for the chemical ethyl alcohol. It is the main ingredient in all alcoholic beverages.
Some small quantities of ethanol are produced in nature by fermentation of rotten fruits and other organic materials containing starch and sugars. Some bacteria is also produced in the bodies of humans and some other animals by the action of benign bacteria in the intestines. However, most of the ethanol used as beverages is prepared by by humans using fermentation process. Ethanol is also manufactured by heating ethylene and water under pressure. This process is carried out in the presence of a phosphoric acid which acts as a catalyst.
