Perhaps you are searching for the description of 'core' of the cognitive faculties of human beings!

Please note that majority of the scientific community go by the saying,"whatever is psychological,it is ultimately biological".To put it simply, physical brain is said to be  at the core of cognitive functions like thinking, perception, attention etc.,What we understand as 'mind' is considered as cerebral activities!

It is a fact that humans have been searching for centuries, the definitive meaning of mind since the philosophers and intelectuals of earlier centuries could not accept the presumption that 'dead matter'could give rise to 'conscious or intelligent matter'!

Psychologists as a matter of fact, do not extend their understanding of mind beyond mental processes.

The answer to your question, whether one accepts or not, lies in the genuine integrative process of science and religion.
