What strategy do some of the soldiers use to protect themselves in the battle? Are they all in agreement about this strategy?
Some of the soldiers choose to run away from the front lines when they are faced with a charge from the enemy lines. This strategy is not employed by all the men, and there is certainly disagreement about this strategy and the ethical nature of running away from your fellow soldiers. However, the novel does a wonderful job showing the futility and meaningless loss of lives that war brings, and as such, there is certainly an element of sympathy provided for the position of the temporary deserters.
The protagonist of the novel, Henry, uses this strategy of running away from the front lines when he is faced with a charge from the Confederate infantry. At first, Henry remains with his infantry line and chooses to stand with the rest of the soldiers....
