What steps do Ralph and Piggy take toward helping the boys survive in Lord of the Flies?
Ralph and Piggy both strike the reader as two of the more grounded and practical boys on the island. One of the very first things that Piggy and Ralph do together is to use the conch to call all of the boys together for a meeting; using the conch was, of course, Piggy's idea, but Ralph implements it successfully. Once the conch sounded, the boys arrive on the beach. This moment proves important to to the boys' survival, because they have a much better chance of surviving in a protective group than if they were off on their own, fending for themselves independently.
Later Ralph, the newly elected chief, also feels his responsibility as leader keenly and wants to do his best to look out for the interests and collective safety of the group. Ralph builds shelters and also implements a system of rules to keep everyone on the beach safe and healthy. For example, one of the rules regarding where the boys should use the restroom, is to protect the fruit supply.
