Historians still debate the possible causes of the death of one of America's greatest writers, Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was found on a Baltimore street "in great distress" on October 3, 1849, and he died four days later in a Baltimore hospital without sufficiently regaining consciousness to explain his predicament. Interestingly, Poe was wearing someone else's clothes when found. Among the speculated causesĀ of his death:

  • epilepsy
  • tuberculosis
  • diabetes
  • brain lesion
  • heart disease
  • alcoholism
  • cooping (forced drug or alcohol consumption, which could explain his clothes)
  • rabies
  • suicide
  • cholera
  • syphilis
  • attempted murder
  • influenza
  • apoplexy
  • delirium tremens (alcohol or drug withdrawal, similar to the DTs)
  • brain tumor
  • meningeal inflammation

A University of Maryland study believes Poe had all the symptoms of rabies. For a detailed and enthralling look at Poe's death, "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe," check out the site below.
