George Orwell’s book 1984 describes political changes and the suppression of people’s ideals and individuality. The book creates a society in which people are watched at all times by their government. Every activity is regulated and relationships are forbidden. Prior to the changes, war had been a constant. The changes were put into place to assure peace. The television remains on at all times and cannot be shut off. Politically it broadcasts propaganda to everyone on a regular basis.

In the culture, people work assigned jobs. They are not allowed to complain. The people are afraid to make sounds because they are overheard. One is expected to conduct activities within the view of the television. The environment and everything cultural is linked to political control of the people by the Ministry.

“Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision, which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard.”

The Thought Police roam around obtaining information and keeping the people in line. They assist in making the political party secure in its level of empowerment over the people. The people are required to have unity in thought. To think differently or against the government is dangerous.

“To keep them in control was not difficult.  A few agents of the Thought Police moved always among them.”

The people are provided shows that demonstrate war. The war reports show how many people have been killed. The shows are another form of controlling the people. In addition, when someone begins to think outside of the party, the person is reprogrammed mentally. No social freedoms exist. People cannot hold discussions on anything that is against the government, and communication is restricted.

All of the social conversation has to be carefully exchanged in support of the government. Political views are required to be those presented for the people to accept and the entire environment of the people is shaped, set-up, and developed by the government. Big Brother is always watching the people to ensure things stay the way the government wants.
