Jon Krakauer points out a number of instances in Into Thin Air where a major decision has to be made. At first, the major decisions involve climbing itself: the members of the party wish to reach the summit but do not have the strength or mental clarity to do so together, instead splitting apart (involuntarily) into different groups as they scale Everest. This is presented by Krakauer as the first major error: the inexperienced climbers do not understand the best process for reaching the summit and do not see a problem in the group becoming split up.

What's more, some members of the party are physically unable to descend back to camp once they reach the summit and the blizzard rolls in. This creates a number of key decisions: some members of the party decide to go back and look for them and attempt a rescue, while others lack the physical or mental capability to do so and thus cannot help. As a result, some climbers freeze to death because they are separated and cannot be rescued.
