The biggest inconsistency in Jefferson's life is his treatment of slaves. Jefferson is credited with writing the Declaration of Independece which expresses that "all men are created equal" and the right "to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". But these rights were not granted to any person of color. Also, Jefferson's slave, Sally Hemmings, was listed as a free woman, and acted as his first lady, while he was ambassador to France. But immediately upon returning to American, listed her as his slave. He also never acknowledged her children as being his, nor did he grant them freedom until after his death.
