What are some ideas for a paper about Aldous Huxley and Brave New World?
It's a synthesis paper where we do research about the author that relates to Brave New World. We had to come up with questions that dealt with both, such as "Is Huxley commenting on how far we can push science?" If I used that for my paper (which is the only thing I have come up with), my thesis would be that Huxley is not warning us of science advancement because so on and so on.
I would deeply appreciate other suggestions on what to write about.
In Brave New World, I don't think science is the problem. Certainly, it's not the primary target of Huxley's satirical attack. Rather, I think the novel goes after big government, commercialism, and a public that values mindlessness pleasure and entertainment over family, education, and religion.
I would look for a topic that looks at how Huxley packages his satirical attacks:
- Look at the names of people: Lenina is metonym for Vladimir Lenin; Ford = Henry Ford; Marx = Karl Marx. Why does he target these icons?
- Look at the role of entertainment in the novel: Centrifugal Bubblepuppy = soccer and football; "feelies" are the modern equivalent of Internet pornography; soma = any kind of mindless distraction (recreational drug use, the media...). All of these lead people to choose pleasure over the intellectual the ethical. Why?
- Look at how and why the family is under attack in the novel: by government-mandated birth control, importance of casual sex, early childhood education, and the use of the caste system
- And, look at Enotes' critical commentary sections for excellent essays and essay topic outlines (see below)...
