What are some great books that are non-fiction, for sophmores (10th graders) in high school? I would like a list of good non-fiction books for a sophmore. Thank you very much you are all appreciated.

The books that I think of first are memoirs and autobiographies like Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas.

There are works of fiction that tell true stories also, like Black Boy (Richard Wright). But this wouldn't quite fall into the non-fiction category.

Other possibilities:

  • The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
  • Making Comics by Scott McCLoud

Some of my students had to choose a non-fiction free reading book last year and they had a lot of luck with the Jon Krakauer books like Into the Wild or Into Thin Air. Both are great outdoorsy books if you would rather adventure non-fiction rather than historical non-fiction.

Another student really enjoyed reading about the Holocaust had loved The Boy Who Dared. I will second the above posters recommendation of Night because it is a fantastic and moving memoir.

Good luck!

I might suggest The Correspondence of Mr Justice Holmes and Sir Frederick Pollock, 1874-1932: Holmes-Pollock Letters. This is a collections of letters between two men who started out so alike, then followed such separate paths, though Holmes always quietly yearned for the path followed by Pollock. This collection reveals much about America as Holmes sat on the Supreme Court during very formative times, including World War I. It could be followed by Holmes's biography, such as the title Honorable Justice: The Life of Oliver Wendell Holmes. I might also suggest The Bottom Billion by Paul Collier. It explains the poverty cycle of the poorest of the world's underdeveloped countries.

It really depends a lot on reding level. Most books written for adults but are popular nonfiction are at a level that 10th graders can enjoy and understand. Some examples are Night, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Dougalss, Outliers, and autobiography.

Our 10th grade English was paired with World History. We tended to focus on the holocaust as part of our non-fiction unit. I often found books like The Hiding Place, The Diary of Anne Frank, or Night to be good choices. These books held the students attention while telling a true story. Often, my students saw non-fiction as boring. A non-fiction book about events that captivated the whole world tended to change their minds. Studying a non-fiction work about the holocaust also allowed me to slip in some supplemental non-fiction material as well. It was easy to find short articles and such on a topic so well known.
